The Chainsmokers have had dance music on lock since 2014. With their debut single “#Selfie,” they gave the mainstream crowd a taste of what they had to offer. By 2016, with the release of “Closer,” they were one of the most well known dance acts out. In 2018, after just two years, “Closer” went diamond.
Featuring Halsey, who was also launched into super stardom by the song, “Closer” is about a young man and woman who have recently moved in with each other. The duet, also featuring the Chainsmoker’s Drew Taggart, features topics such as money problems, feeling home sick, and other problems a young couple might have to deal with.
Shortly after the release of “Closer,” The Chainsmokers conducted an interview where they discussed their past, present, and future. Their fans, their changing live show, and many other topics also popped up during the conversation.
Alex Pall explained that his career began as a DJ in the New York Area; Drew Taggart was interning at Interscope on the side while attending University. When Pall’s prior partner left him hanging mutual contacts brought Taggart and Pall together. Thanks to their instant chemistry they were able to go straight to work.
The interviewer asked The Chainsmokers about who their fans are and Alex Pall responded. “Thanks to Instagram, I can tell you exactly what it is,” he said. “We’re seeing places like the Philippines and South Africa.”
According to Pall, his fanbase consists of 16 to 25 year olds all over the world.
“Closer” was not only their biggest song commercial, it was the start of a new era for the band. Andrew Taggart stepped out from behind the turn tables and moved to the microphone. As the lead singer of the group, Taggart is able to provide the vocals for all songs moving forward. They no longer have to rely on guest vocalists for their tracks.
